Thomas cuts teaching positions in half and directs teachers “to stop teaching.”
While serving as a charter school leader, Thomas “cut nearly half [her] teachers” and initiated “mid-semester teacher layoffs.” To encourage families to embrace her school closure decisions, “teachers were directed to stop teaching.” Thomas touts ‘co-authoring’ the teacher evaluation bill despite having zero teaching experience. While serving in the legislature, Thomas focused her efforts on targeting Georgia teachers. Despite having zero experience as a K-12 teacher herself, Thomas was quick to tell teachers what to do without spending a day in their shoes. Her own campaign bio brags about “co-authoring the state’s Teacher and Leader Evaluation System,” a “gotcha” tool that has disrespected and devalued our teachers since its inception. Thomas pushes through the largest expansion of high-stakes testing in Georgia history. Thomas’s teacher evaluation legislation also included the largest expansion of high-stakes testing in our state’s history – the SLOs, new state-required tests for every single course in every single grade level. These tests took away valuable instructional time from students and were used to rate and rank our teachers – making them flee the teaching profession en masse and compounding teacher shortages across our state. In Thomas’s bill, 50% of a teacher’s worth was based on high-stakes test scores, leading to a high-pressure environment that hurts our students and teachers. As Thomas left office, her legislative legacy was clear: her policies were driving out nearly half of Georgia’s teachers by their fifth year. |
